Norse Viking culture had an appreciation for various physical embellishments and hair was no exception. Numerous hair accessories were popular among Viking women and men of the era. The most common form of headdress was the fillet, a simple band of cloth or metal worn around the head to secure long tresses. Jewelry was also a popular accessory, especially among the wealthier members of society. Ancient Norse jewelry such as bronze broaches or elaborate combs were commonly found in gravesites and could be used as symbols of status within their culture. Hair pins with intricate motifs on them would be crafted from iron, bronze, and other metals and could indicate someone’s ancestry or socio-economic position in the community. Hairnets made out of wool or linen provided another type of easy to fashion headpiece which would keep unruly locks in place while they worked outdoors gardening or tending to livestock. Overall, Norse Vikings had a variety of striking hair accessories that spoke volumes about a person’s identity and sense of style.
