Viking rune rings were popular during the Viking Age, an era that lasted roughly from the 8th to the 11th centuries. The runes on these intricate pieces of jewelry served a variety of purposes. For one, they were a way to express feelings or emotions that may not have had words or weren't shared openly - like love or loyalty. Secondly, runes were thought to bring luck and protection, proving particularly popular within battles and other dangerous experiences such as sea voyages. Runes also acted as mementos of important occasions and dedications – when someone gave (or received) a ring with written runes on it, it was essentially giving (or receiving) their word. Lastly, Viking rune rings served as status symbols – jewelry only those in higher classes and with more resources could afford. As such, these rings weren't only stunning pieces of art but were also laden with social layers and meaning.
